چکیده
Abstract This paper summarizes an NIH-funded research project designed to study the strength of high temperature superconductors under circumferential hoop stress, in order qualify these materials for high-field (> 1 GHz-class) NMR magnets. The unique approach presented here is spin test coils at rotational speeds, approaching 50,000 rpm, induce mechanical stresses which are equivalent magnetic Lorentz experienced by a solenoid insert coil. Bi-2212 wires and were tested sub-cooled nitrogen determine if any damage was imparted each test. These preliminary experimental results demonstrate that, with further development, this could prove be simple method qualifying superconducting

Nb3Sn Wire Technology for High-field Superconducting Magnet
Nb3Sn superconducting wires are widely used for highfield superconducting magnets, and the NMR magnet is one of the most successful applications. In order to realize a large Jc (critical current density), which is essential to high-field superconducting magnets, several different types of production methods have been developed, such as the bronze-route method, the powderin-tube method and the i...
متن کاملA new ring-shape high-temperature superconducting trapped-field magnet
This paper presents a new trapped-field magnet made of second-generation high-temperature superconducting (2G HTS) rings. This so-called ring-shape 2G HTS magnet has the potential to provide much stronger magnetic fields relative to existing permanent magnets. Compared to existing 2G HTS trappedfield magnets, e.g. 2G HTS bulks and stacks, this new ring-shape 2G HTS magnet is more flexible in si...
متن کاملHigh - field ESR studies of the quantum spin magnet
We report an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the s = 1/2-Heisenberg pseudo-ladder magnet CaCu 2 O 3 in pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T. At sub-Terahertz frequencies we observe an ESR signal originating from a small amount of uncompensated spins residing presumably at the imperfections of the strongly antiferromagnetically correlated host spin lattice. The data give evidence that these ...
متن کاملStatus of High Temperature Superconducting Magnet Development
Since the discovery of high temperature superconductors more than 2 decades ago, there has been interest in their use for future fusion machines. Lack of performance of commercially available materials, however, dampened the initial optimism. However, recent advances in HTS materials, mostly second-generation tapes, open attractive topologies. In addition to reduced cryogenic loads and increase...
متن کاملElectromagnetic-Induced Quench of an Inner-Shim Coil for a REBCO High-Temperature Superconducting NMR Magnet
A RE(rare earth)Ba2Cu3Ox (REBCO) high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coil is a promising candidate to achieve a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) magnet operated at a magnetic field >23.5 Tesla (T), i.e. 1 H NMR frequency of 1 GHz. We developed and tested a 400 MHz (9.39 T) NMR magnet using an REBCO inner coil. The system included a low-temperature superconducting (LTS) shim coil inside the R...
